Друзья, первый технический пост на английском языке в надежде, что кому-то это будет полезно. Прошу ногами не бить.
Recently my friend gave me his Cowon D2 after unsuccessful firmware upgrade. The player printed the word "Starting...", firmware version 0.00 and two dots on the circle and refused to boot further. I have googled around and found the
topic that describes recovery procedure for a bricked D2, but it did not help me. Some info from this thread and some activity of my own brain helped me to recover friends' player and I will get a lot of beer. :)
So here is the description of Cowon D2 with 0.00 and two dots recovery procedure. You will need your bricked Cowon D2, a computer with Windows XP with administrator rights or Linux (program compiling howto is
here) and USB cable. The further instructions are for Windows XP.
1. Download firmware for your player from Cowon website (I used version 2.57 from
here) and unzip it to some folder on your hard drive. Move file d2N.bin from the folder titled 1 to the root of C: drive.
2. Download tcctool from
here. Unzip archive and move tcctool.exe from it to the root of C: drive.
3. Your D2 should be switched off. If it says "Starting", push Reset button.
4. Your D2 is now switched off. Press "Menu" button and then slide and hold Power switch for about 3-5 secs while holding Menu button. This will put your bricked Cowon D2 player into recovery mode. The screen will remain off but the D2 is now switched on. Release buttons and connect USB cable from the D2 to the computer. "New hardware wizard" will appear. Install drivers from the folder where you unzipped tcctool.zip on step 2.
5. Press Start -> Run..., type cmd and press Enter. The black window of the command prompt will appear. Type the following commands, each finished by Enter:
c:
cd \
tcctool -d cowond2 d2N.bin
After executing the last command you should see something like this:
C:\>tcctool -d cowond2 d2N.bin
tcctool v0.1 - (C) 2007 Dave Chapman

IMPORTANT! Your D2 should now start normally, but the firmware is not flashed yet and if you turn your player off, when you start it again, you will see 0.00. The reason is that the D2 is booted from the firmware file by tcctool and the firmware is not actually flashed to Cowon's memory. Immediately after (
AFTER! NOT BEFORE!) tcctool saying that it uploaded application successfully and D2 saying "Starting... 2.57" you should disconnect USB cable from the player. If you are too slow and the player says "Battery charging", you should disconnect it, put into recovery mode again and re-run tcctool.
6. Select your country if prompted. Now you have a temporary (till first turn-off or reset) working player on main menu screen. Connect USB cable. The player should be detected by Windows as a removable drive and started charging. Copy file d2N.bin from C:\ drive (it is from folder 1 of the firmware) to D2's root and turn it off.
7. Put the player into recovery mode again and re-run tcctool. When player says "Starting...2.57" disconnect USB cable from it. Firmware upgrade process will start and, when it completes, the player will become fully operational. After completing firmware upgrade put two files from folder "2" of the firmware to the D2's root, disconnect it from computer, switch it off and then on again. Congratulations, your bricked Cowon D2 is completely recovered.

I hope that this How-To raised from the dead at least one bricked Cowon D2 player except the one that I have revived by myself.
